Saudi Arabia has kicked off its first operational trial of self-driving vehicles in Riyadh, marking a major milestone in its journey toward a smart, secure, and AI-powered transport system aligned with Vision 2030.

The initiative was launched in the presence of Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics and Chairman of the Public Transport Authority, who described it as a reflection of the Kingdom’s commitment to building a fully integrated transportation sector that fuels economic growth and enhances quality of life.

This landmark pilot is the result of a comprehensive public-private collaboration. It involves coordination between the Ministry of Interior, the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, and other entities within the digital economy and innovation ecosystem.

The autonomous vehicles are being tested in real-world conditions across key locations, including King Khalid International Airport, major highways, and selected zones within central Riyadh. Each vehicle includes an onboard safety operator to ensure secure operation, while the Public Transport Authority oversees system performance and safety.

Al-Jasser emphasized that the project sets a precedent in embracing artificial intelligence and local innovation, representing a pioneering model of public-private partnership.
