Riyadh Royal Commission awards contract to extend Metro Line 2

The project will be carried out by the Arriyadh New Mobility Consortium

Line 2 of Riyadh Metro to be extended at a cost of around $800 to $900 million

Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded a major contract—estimated between $800 million and $900 million—for the extension of Line 2 of the Riyadh Metro. The project will be carried out by the Arriyadh New Mobility Consortium.

The 8.4-kilometre extension includes 1.3 km of elevated track and 7.1 km underground, with five new stations: two elevated and three underground. The route begins at the current Line 2 terminus at King Saud University (KSU) and proceeds to KSU Medical City, KSU West, Diriyah East, Diriyah Central—where it will connect with the future Line 7—and finally ends at Diriyah South.

The Arriyadh New Mobility Consortium includes Italy’s Webuild, India’s Larsen & Toubro, Saudi Arabia’s Nesma & Partners, Japan’s Hitachi, Italy’s Ansaldo STS, Canada’s Bombardier, Spain’s Idom, and Australia’s WorleyParsons.

Project management and construction supervision will be handled by Riyadh Metro Transit Consultants (RMTC), a joint venture between the U.S.-based Parsons and French engineering firms Egis and Systra. RMTC has previously overseen construction on Lines 1, 2, and 3 of the Riyadh Metro.

The consortium has prior experience with the city’s transport infrastructure, having secured the $5.21 billion contract for Line 3—also known as the Orange Line—in 2013. This 41-kilometre line spans from Jeddah Road in the west to the Second Eastern Ring Road in the east.

Overview of Riyadh Metro

Riyadh Metro's first phase consists of six lines with a total of 84 stations, covering 176 kilometres. The phased launch of the network concluded with the Orange Line opening on 5 January this year.

  • Line 2 (Red Line): 25.1 km, from King Fahd Sports City to King Saud University, with 15 stations.
  • Line 5 (Green Line): 13.3 km, serving key ministries and government buildings, including the Defence and Finance ministries.
  • Line 1 (Blue Line): Connects Olaya Street to Batha.
  • Line 4 (Yellow Line): Runs along King Khalid International Airport Road.
  • Line 6 (Purple Line): Links Abdul Rahman Bin Awf Road with Al-Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussain Road.

The Riyadh Metro is a core component of the $23 billion Riyadh Public Transport Project, which also includes a comprehensive bus network. Though originally set for completion in 2018, the project faced delays due to disputes over construction timelines and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The RCRC awarded the initial construction contracts in July 2013. In late 2022, it reached agreements with the main contracting consortiums to finalize the remaining works.
