Saudi Arabia’s Neom Delta Junction tunnels project advances with new proposals

The Neom Delta Junction tunneling project, encompassing 26.5 kilometers of underground work, has advanced with firms submitting updated proposals.

Contractors provided their revised bids on 10 November, following an extension from the original 27 October deadline. The project involves constructing two distinct tunnel lots, designated as the north and south sections, to serve as the railway junction linking the Spine to the Neom Connector.

Originally announced in April last year, Neom invited selected contractors to bid on the project. Although the evaluation process had progressed earlier in 2024, it was delayed for undisclosed reasons.

The tunneling work was initially divided into five packages, each requiring excavation of approximately 5 kilometers through hard rock using both drill-and-blast and cut-and-cover methods.

The Spine, a core infrastructure corridor running parallel to The Line, incorporates a high-speed rail system connecting to the Connector South. This railway extension links The Spine to Oxagon, Neom's industrial hub, and the port at Duba on the Red Sea.

US-based Aecom serves as the design consultant for the Spine, with Bechtel providing project management services.

Construction on Neom's railway network began last year when a joint venture between Italy-based Webuild and Riyadh-based Shibh Al-Jazira Contracting (Sajco) secured a $1.5 billion contract for the Connector South line. This contract involves constructing a 75-kilometer railway line that includes earthworks, 14 viaducts, seven roads, nine rail underpasses, 152 pipe and box culverts, a freight line, infrastructure maintenance depots, and related facilities.

The infrastructure corridor will extend southward from The Line to the Neom City Station, marking significant progress in Neom's ambitious development plans.
