Saudi Arabia's Railways taking leap towards the goals of Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia's railway sector takes a significant stride towards achieving the goals set forth in Vision 2030, as Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) and Stadler Rail finalize a deal for the procurement and maintenance of 10+10 Next Generation Passenger Trains.

These trains, crafted to adhere to the latest European and international standards, will accommodate up to 320 passengers each and will be specifically tailored to withstand Saudi Arabia's challenging climate conditions.

The introduction of these new trains is expected to enhance connectivity between Riyadh and Dammam, two of the kingdom's major cities.

Valued at 600 million Swiss francs, the agreement entails Stadler supplying 10 trainsets initially, with an option for an additional 10 sets. Alongside the provision of the units, Stadler will offer comprehensive maintenance support and spare parts for a decade, extendable to an additional 10 trainsets for another decade.

His Excellency Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of SAR, remarked, "The procurement of these modern trains addresses the growing demand for East Train services. These trains will effectively double the annual capacity of the East Trains to over 3.8 million passengers and facilitate direct express service between Riyadh and Dammam."

Saudi Arabia has ambitious railway plans for the next decade, aiming to realize the objectives outlined in Vision 2030. These plans include linking the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf ports and establishing an 8,000-kilometer rail network across the country, with an increased annual passenger capacity of over 3 million and the transportation of 50 million tonnes of freight.

Dr. Bashar bin Khaled Al-Malik, CEO of SAR, underscored the company's commitment to its pioneering role in the sector, stating, "The new trains will serve the entire operational scope of the East Railway network by increasing seat capacity, the number of daily trips, and the annual capacity of the network, as these trains will cover the stations of Riyadh, Hofuf, Abqaiq, and Dammam."
