Italian construction giant wins contract to build high speed railway in Neom
Italy’s Webuild Group has signed a €1.4bn contract
with joint-venture partner Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company (Sajco) to
design and build 57km of a high-speed railway in Saudi Arabia’s futuristic city
Neom.
Both partners will build most of the “Connector”, a railway linking Neom’s
industrial region Oxagon with the linear city of The Line. The Line is 170km
long, 500m high, and 200m wide area with multi-storey structures.
The JV agreement is split 70/30
between Webuild and Sajco. Both companies will carry out civil works for two
high-speed and two freight railway tracks. The high-speed railway will carry
trains running at speeds of up to 230km/h.
The contract includes building
viaducts and underpasses.
NEOM’s upcoming development, The Line, will have no
conventional roads or vehicles. It will accommodate up to nine million people
within an area of 34 square kilometers.
NEOM is looking forward to power the project with 100
percent clean energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and green
hydrogen.
