Red Sea Global unveils 'Coral Commitment' at COP28: A pledge to safeguard global coral reefs

Red Sea Global (RSG), in collaboration with The Red Sea and Amaala, has introduced a groundbreaking 'Coral Commitment' at COP28, dedicated to the protection and rejuvenation of coral ecosystems worldwide.

The initiative, disclosed aboard the renowned "Ocean Xplorer" vessel, includes a strategic partnership with CORDAP, the unveiling of the marine life institute, Corallium, and the presentation of outcomes from the initial phase of the Coral Gardening Pilot Project.

John Pagano, Group CEO of RSG, stated, "The Red Sea has some of the most stunning and resilient corals anywhere in the world. They may even hold the secret to global coral health. But unfortunately, not even Red Sea coral is invincible. We need to protect and regenerate this vital ecosystem. Our Coral Commitment is a promise to do just that."

Professor Carlos Duarte, Executive Director at CORDAP, emphasized, "CORDAP together with RSG is an engine for keeping that dream alive."

Coral Gardening Pilot Project: RSG's Coral Gardening Pilot Project has already shown promising progress, involving the monitoring of 300 reef sites, coral relocation, and testing of farming techniques with an impressive 97 percent success rate. In 2021, offshore floating nurseries were established to sustain and grow rescued corals, achieving a 97 percent success rate.

Raed Albasseet, Group Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer at RSG, expressed, "Our collective efforts have yielded valuable insights into the best conditions and techniques for coral enhancement. We're confident, as we move into the next phase, we can further push up survival rates and expand capacity."

Next year, RSG plans to acquire a million-dollar coral breeding lab to significantly boost coral growth. Advanced technology, including robots and machine learning, will be employed for coral monitoring, responding swiftly to potential threats. The use of 3D printed materials for artificial substrates marks a pioneering step in reef building.

Corallium: Marine Life Institute: Corallium, RSG's Marine Life Institute, introduced on the Ocean Xplorer, serves as a hub for marine research, visitor experiences, and environmental education. Specialized zones support conservation efforts for sea turtles, sharks, dugongs, and cetaceans, focusing on temporary human care for the sea creatures. The facility aims to inspire ocean stewardship and drive positive change.

John Pagano added, "Through Corallium, we hope to inspire a lifelong love for our oceans and ignite a wave of positive change for the planet."

Among RSG's 2023 achievements is the opening of a mangrove nursery, a significant step toward planting 50 million mangroves, enhancing biodiversity, and sequestering carbon. As The Red Sea welcomes guests, Amaala remains on track for a 2025 opening, featuring Corallium and iconic destinations in the Triple Bay phase one.
