NEOM project advances Saudi Arabia’s green hydrogen vision

NEOM hydrogen plant now 80% complete

Saudi Arabia is making major strides in its green hydrogen initiative, with construction of the NEOM hydrogen plant now 80% complete. This progress includes the installation of renewable energy infrastructure and the integration of critical equipment across the site.

A Clean Energy Mega-Project

The NEOM project aims to generate 4 gigawatts of electricity using solar and wind power by mid-2026. This renewable energy will power the production of up to 600 tons of carbon-free hydrogen per day. The hydrogen will be converted into green ammonia for global export, as well as for use in industrial processes and transportation.

Air Products is serving as the project’s main contractor and will be the exclusive off-taker of all green hydrogen produced at the facility.

Significant Infrastructure Progress

Key components such as wind turbines, hydrogen storage tanks, electrolyzers, cold boxes, and piping systems have already arrived on site and are being assembled. These elements will support the plant’s ambitious operational goals.

The first production of green ammonia is expected in 2027. Once operational, Project NEOM is set to become a global model for clean energy development. It is projected to prevent around five million tons of CO₂ emissions annually—making a substantial contribution to international climate targets.
