Saudi Arabia: Feasibility review of NEOM’s flagship project launched
Saudi Arabia's ambitious urban
megaproject, The Line, is undergoing a strategic feasibility review led
by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), marking a critical reassessment of the
170 km linear city’s future under the broader NEOM initiative.
According to Bloomberg, the review
will evaluate the project’s cost structure, timeline, and scope amid changing
economic conditions, including reduced oil revenues and growing fiscal
pressures. External consultants have been brought in to assess whether the
original vision remains practical and financially sustainable.
Despite these evaluations, Saudi
officials maintain that The Line remains a national priority. However,
sources indicate that scaling back certain elements is under consideration.

Progress on the Ground
Construction continues along a
2.4 km central segment, anchored by a $186 million concrete batching facility.
Earthworks, excavation, and foundation development are ongoing, with a revised
goal to complete a 5 km stretch by 2030. The full 170 km rollout may now extend
to 2045.
The review underscores broader
questions surrounding Vision 2030 — namely, how to balance transformative
ambition with economic and operational realities. With over $50 billion already
invested and Phase 1 projected to cost up to $320 billion, the financial stakes
are high.
