Shushah Island of Saudi Arabia to become top luxury destination

Saudi Arabia’s futuristic city NEOM has unveiled new details about Shushah Island, a project initially mentioned in 2021, set to become a sought-after super-luxury island destination in the region.

Designed by renowned firms Gensler, Gio Forma, RBTA, and SWA, the island development boasts an impressive array of features, including a marina, hotels, villas, a beach club, and a unique underwater museum. However, the most significant highlight is the world's largest coral garden, featuring a nursery and research center, which is dedicated to protecting and rejuvenating coral reefs, especially in the face of climate change challenges.

The completion of the coral garden is slated for 2025, as confirmed by NEOM and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Encompassing an expansive 100 hectares on the shores of the Red Sea, Shushah Island aims to transcend luxury tourism and evolve into a global center for showcasing efforts to preserve marine life, particularly coral reefs.

NEOM CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr expressed the project's commitment to environmental conservation and marine preservation, emphasizing the significance of their collaboration with KAUST in achieving these goals.

The island's floating marina will comprise 43 berths and two airplane docks, in addition to the coral garden. The development also includes a freestanding 200-meter high hotel with 300 keys, an upper upscale boutique hotel with 60 keys, a luxury boutique hotel with 70 keys, village apartments, underwater research centers, villas, and a beach club.

NEOM's mission to reinvent conservation for the benefit of the natural world and future generations finds a vivid example in their collaboration with KAUST. The innovative technologies and combined expertise used in this project aim to expand scientific understanding of coral adaptability to climate change while safeguarding the Red Sea's indigenous coral reefs, essential for ocean biodiversity and NEOM's overall success.

NEOM has also released a construction progress video for multiple sites, reaching the construction stage with defined goals for 2023. Notably, NEOM has partnered with Atkins, Collective Retreats, and Marriott, and there are reported collaborations with various esteemed architectural firms.
