Saudi Arabia: AlUla’s Al-Gharameel Reserve witnesses Perseid meteor shower

Saudi Arabia's AlUla growing in popularity for astronomy and nature

The Perseid meteor shower illuminated the night skies over AlUla’s Al-Gharameel Reserve this week, showcasing the region’s growing appeal as a destination for astronomy, nature and adventure tourism.

The annual Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak in mid-August and is best observed from locations with minimal light pollution. AlUla’s remote landscapes provide particularly favorable conditions for viewing the celestial event.

Al-Gharameel, renowned for its distinctive sandstone pillars, has been internationally certified as an International Dark Sky Park. Its exceptionally low levels of light pollution make it an ideal location for stargazing and observing meteor showers.

Located approximately an hour to 90 minutes by car from central AlUla, the reserve also offers visitors the opportunity to experience the Kingdom’s diverse natural landscapes along the journey.

Travelers can reach Al-Gharameel through several routes, each offering a distinct view of Saudi Arabia’s geography. The route from Tabuk covers about 295 kilometers and can take up to four hours, passing through expansive desert landscapes.

The longer journey from Jeddah spans roughly 700 kilometers and follows sections of the Red Sea coastline, with travelers passing through destinations including Yanbu and Al-Wajh before reaching AlUla.

The route from Madinah provides a middle-ground option in terms of distance while offering views of Harrat Khaybar, one of the Kingdom’s notable volcanic landscapes.

Beyond the meteor shower itself, the journey to Al-Gharameel highlights the diversity of Saudi Arabia’s natural environment, from coastal landscapes and volcanic terrain to the vast desert scenery surrounding AlUla.
