Saudi Arabia awards $490M museum contract for Diriyah

Saudi Arabia has awarded a $490 million construction contract for the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art, a key cultural component of the $63.2 billion Diriyah development.

The contract was granted by Diriyah Company to a joint venture between Hassan Allam Construction Saudi and Albawani, who will oversee the construction of the new museum.

Planned as a flagship institution, the museum will focus on documenting, researching, and showcasing Saudi modern and contemporary art while supporting artists across generations. It aims to serve as a global platform connecting local creative voices with international audiences.

Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO of Diriyah Company, said the project will strengthen Diriyah’s position as the Kingdom’s cultural capital, offering a world-class venue for artistic exchange and engagement.

The museum has been designed by Godwin Austen Johnson, with support from Rafaat Miller Consulting. It will span more than 45,000 square meters of gross floor area, with a total built-up space exceeding 77,000 square meters.

The new facility will become the main home of SAMoCA, complementing its existing exhibition space in Riyadh’s Jax District. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Hammad, CEO of the Museums Commission, described it as a future hub for Saudi contemporary art, bringing together established and emerging artists while fostering international dialogue.

Diriyah itself is one of Saudi Arabia’s most ambitious urban developments. Once completed, it is expected to contribute around $18.6 billion to the national GDP, generate over 180,000 jobs, accommodate approximately 100,000 residents, and attract up to 50 million visitors annually.
