Film AlUla celebrates premiere of film Hijra at Venice Film Festival
Film AlUla hosted an elegant reception at the St. Regis Venice to celebrate the premiere of the Saudi film Hijra at the 82nd Venice Film Festival.
The event followed the film’s official screening and was
attended by members of the cast and crew, including acclaimed Saudi director Shahad
Ameen and lead actors Khairia Nazmi and Lamar Faden. Guests gathered to mark
the international debut of the poignant drama, which has emerged as a standout
from Saudi Arabia's growing film industry.

“Kandahar” (2023): The first major U.S. action film shot in Saudi Arabia’s
AlUla
Hijra tells the moving story of a grandmother (played by
Nazmi) and her granddaughter (Faden) as they journey across northern Saudi
Arabia in search of a missing teenage girl. Set against the backdrop of Hajj,
the film was shot over 55 days in eight locations across the Kingdom, including
Taif, Jeddah, Madinah, Wadi Al-Faraa, AlUla, Tabuk, Neom, and Duba.
The premiere is part of a broader presence by Saudi Arabia’s
Red Sea Film Foundation, which returns to Venice this year with a robust slate
of films and industry initiatives. The Foundation continues to champion
emerging voices from Saudi Arabia, the Arab world, Africa, and Asia.

Alongside Hijra, the Foundation is also showcasing Cyril
Aris’ A Sad and Beautiful World, developed with the support of the Red Sea
Labs, Red Sea Fund, and Red Sea Souk. Other featured titles include Yanis
Koussim’s Roqia and Suzannah Mirghani’s Cotton Queen, both screening as part of
Venice Critics’ Week and offering compelling explorations of modern Arab
identity. Rounding out the lineup is Damien Hauser’s Memory of Princess Mumbi.
The reception underscored Film AlUla's commitment to
supporting Saudi cinema on the world stage and fostering global dialogue around
culturally rich, locally rooted storytelling.
