Hijra tells the moving story of a grandmother (played by Nazmi) and her granddaughter (Faden) as they journey across northern Saudi Arabia in search of a missing teenage girl. Set against the backdrop of Hajj, the film was shot over 55 days in eight locations across the Kingdom, including Taif, Jeddah, Madinah, Wadi Al-Faraa, AlUla, Tabuk, Neom, and Duba.

The premiere is part of a broader presence by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Foundation, which returns to Venice this year with a robust slate of films and industry initiatives. The Foundation continues to champion emerging voices from Saudi Arabia, the Arab world, Africa, and Asia.

Other featured titles include Yanis Koussim’s Roqia and Suzannah Mirghani’s Cotton Queen, both screening as part of Venice Critics’ Week and offering compelling explorations of modern Arab identity. Rounding out the lineup is Damien Hauser’s Memory of Princess Mumbi.

The reception underscored Film AlUla's commitment to supporting Saudi cinema on the world stage and fostering global dialogue around culturally rich, locally rooted storytelling.
