Saudi Arabia: NEOM’s THE LINE starts installing 16,000 piles
NEOM’s groundbreaking city of the future, THE LINE, has hit a new milestone as it pushes forward with the world’s largest piling operation — a key step in transforming its bold vision into reality.
According to Giles Pendleton, Chief Operating Officer of THE LINE, Phase 1
construction is currently deploying some of the largest piling rigs in the world, installing over 16,000 piles, including enormous 2.5-meter-diameter friction piles,
each stretching 70 meters long
and weighing up to 850 tonnes.
A Visionary Urban Concept Taking
Shape
First announced in 2021, THE LINE is NEOM’s most ambitious urban project — a
170-kilometre-long, 500-metre-high vertical city that aims to redefine urban
living. Designed with AI-powered transport systems, layered infrastructure, and
a fully renewable energy supply, THE LINE replaces traditional city models with
a "gravity-free," modular approach, offering walkable communities and
deep integration with nature.

development: Piling work nearing completion for Saudi Arabia’s linear city
Construction began in late 2022, and foundational work is accelerating. Over
4,500 piles have already been installed, with full Phase 1 delivery targeting
2030, and final completion expected by 2045.
Engineering Scale and
Modular Precision
The city’s substructure is a feat of engineering, built with off-site
modular assemblies and prefabricated components designed for high-efficiency
installation. Foundations include green-concrete raft slabs up to 8 meters
thick, supported by piles extending over 50 meters below sea level. Reinforced
concrete cores are being constructed to reach heights of 500 meters, supported
by 4.8 million tonnes of structural steel.
Key facilities supporting the operation span a 50 km² logistics zone,
including:
·
MEP storage zones
·
Steel yards
·
MMC (Modern Methods of
Construction) yards
·
Contractor compounds
·
Systems for seawater
flushing and dewatering
Landmark Features: Stadium,
Marina, and Beyond
Among the most iconic planned structures is a 45,000-seat elevated stadium,
designed with a massive suspended chandelier. Surrounding it will be a panoramic
mirrored façade, covering 2.1 million m², reflecting the desert landscape and
optimizing natural light use.

Arabia: Hiper Piles to be installed in two more modules of NEOM’s The Line
On the city’s edge, NEOM is constructing what is set to become the world’s
largest man-made marina, complete with:
·
TSE (treated sewage
effluent) pump station
·
Generator farm
·
Public access points
·
The Line Hub office
Strategic Partners and
Design Excellence
Top international firms are shaping the first phase, including:
·
Delugan Meissl Associated Architects (DMAA)
·
Gensler
·
Mott MacDonald
Together, they are focused on delivering sustainable, modular, and scalable infrastructure
aligned with NEOM’s long-term urban vision.
Sustainability at the Core
THE LINE integrates sustainability into every aspect of development — from low-carbon materials and off-site fabrication to seawater recycling and minimized onsite emissions. Construction
methods emphasize MMC practices
that reduce environmental impact while increasing speed and efficiency.

Shaping the Future of Cities
While THE LINE’s scale continues to spark global debate, its rapid progress
signals Saudi Arabia’s intent to lead in AI-driven,
eco-conscious urban development under Vision 2030. The current piling
phase is more than a technical achievement — it’s a powerful step toward
realizing one of the most forward-thinking urban models ever envisioned.
As construction surges ahead, THE LINE is no longer just a concept — it’s
becoming a city built for the future.
