AlUla Experiential
Tramway to offer journey through five heritage districts
French rail systems giant Alstom has selected
Spanish technology firm GMV to supply the Automatic Vehicle Location System
(AVLS) for the AlUla Experiential Tramway, a flagship light rail project set in
one of Saudi Arabia’s most iconic cultural destinations.
Part of the country’s broader development plans
under Vision 2030, the AlUla Experiential Tramway is inspired by the historic
Hijaz railway and is designed to offer a unique cultural journey through five
heritage districts, including multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The tramway
will feature 20 state-of-the-art Alstom CITADIS trains operating along a
22.4-kilometer line with 17 stations.

expands with appointment of five new destination management companies
GMV will equip each train with its SAE-R®
platform—an advanced computer-aided dispatch and automatic vehicle location
system. Already in use in major rail networks such as RENFE in Spain, Warsaw
Tramway in Poland, and Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) in Australia, the
SAE-R® solution allows for real-time fleet management, route optimization,
passenger information services, and data analysis for operational efficiency.
In AlUla, the system will be functionally
integrated with a range of onboard and control center systems, including train
control and management systems (TCMS), traction power supply (TPS), automatic
train protection (ATP), passenger counting systems, and digital passenger
information displays both onboard and at stations.
Designed with cybersecurity and reliability at
its core, GMV’s system ensures continuous service availability—even in the
event of component failure—and supports eco-driving through real-time route
information for train operators. A touchscreen human-machine interface (HMI)
will be installed in each driver’s cab, allowing intuitive control and
communication.

A local operations control center, also part
of the installation, will enable operators to monitor the tramway in real time
and generate performance reports through key performance indicators (KPIs).
The AlUla tramway, when completed, is expected
to become a cornerstone of sustainable tourism and smart mobility in Saudi
Arabia, blending cutting-edge transport technology with cultural heritage and
experiential travel.
