Saudi Arabia breaks ground of Misk Heritage Museum in Diriyah

Saudi Arabia has officially broken ground on the Misk Heritage Museum “Asaan,” a bold cultural project set in the historic Diriyah district of Riyadh. Unveiled during a ground-breaking ceremony on International Museum Day, the initiative brings together the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk), Diriyah Company, and world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects.

The 40,000-square-metre museum, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, is envisioned as a new model of cultural engagement, blending interactive exhibits and immersive storytelling. Inspired by traditional Najdi architectural elements, the design reflects the Kingdom’s rich cultural legacy while embracing contemporary expression.

Asaan is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which emphasizes cultural preservation, national identity, and education. Developed under the Misk Foundation’s patronage, the museum will host dynamic exhibition spaces, heritage workshops, and programs that immerse visitors in the customs, crafts, and values of earlier generations.

Beyond its public offerings, Asaan will feature a cutting-edge conservation lab for restoring historical artefacts, a cultural knowledge hub, and specialized training facilities for future museum professionals.

Khaled Al Saqer, CEO of the Misk Heritage Museum Asaan, called the ground-breaking a defining moment.

“Commemorating International Museum Day with the start of construction marks a historic milestone,” said Al Saqer. “Asaan is more than a museum—it’s a cultural experience that bridges generations and deepens our national identity.”

Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO of Diriyah Company, also highlighted the museum’s significance.

“Asaan is a key addition to Diriyah’s expanding cultural landscape,” said Inzerillo. “It reflects our ambition to position Diriyah as a global cultural destination, where Saudi heritage is celebrated in innovative and accessible ways.”
