NEOM Club president
The NEOM Sports Project is shaping up to be one
of the most ambitious initiatives in Saudi Arabia’s sporting landscape, with
goals that stretch far beyond hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. In an interview
with The Athletic, Mishari Al-Mutairi,
president of NEOM Club, outlined a bold vision that positions sport as a
cornerstone of societal transformation in line with Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman's Vision 2030.
Al-Mutairi compared the potential impact of the
NEOM project to the transformation Barcelona underwent after hosting the 1992
Olympic Games. “Sports can be a powerful catalyst for comprehensive change,” he
said, “and that’s exactly what NEOM is striving for—not just world-class
facilities, but a new cultural and athletic identity.”
Building a Competitive Force
NEOM Club, a key part of this broader vision,
is laying the groundwork to become a major player in Saudi and regional
football. Following its recent victory in the Yelo League and promotion to the Roshan Professional
League, the club is targeting qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup within
the next five years.

“We believe in the impossible,” Al-Mutairi
said. “That belief fuels our efforts and pushes us to pursue our goals with
relentless energy.”
He emphasized that sports are integral to the
urban and cultural development of the futuristic NEOM city, not just as
entertainment, but as a driving force for health, community engagement, and
international recognition.
A Model of Dedication and Unity
Al-Mutairi highlighted the importance of teamwork,
discipline, and long-term vision in building a club capable of reaching global
heights. He expressed full confidence in NEOM Club’s ability to deliver
breakthrough achievements in the near future, citing the players’ and
management’s collective determination as a key strength.
As
NEOM continues to rise as a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s transformation, its sports
project stands as a model of how athletic ambition, strategic planning, and
national vision can converge to create a new era in global football.
