Australian firm to work on Neom’s $5 billion Trojena dams project

Australian firm Glaass has been awarded a key subcontract in NEOM’s ambitious $5 billion Trojena Dams project. In an official announcement, Glaass revealed that its contract will cover around 2,800 field workers, with a focus on providing comprehensive quality, health, safety, and environmental services throughout the project.

NEOM awarded the $5 billion contract to Webuild in late 2023, with the goal of constructing three dams that will create a freshwater lake for the Trojena ski resort. The largest of the dams is set to stand 145 meters high and stretch 475 meters across its crest, constructed using 2.7 million cubic meters of roller-compacted concrete (RCC).

In addition, a smaller dam will be built within the planned lake, featuring 650,000 cubic meters of RCC. This kidney-shaped dam will be 38 meters tall and 700 meters long, creating an island submerged below the water level.

Scope of the Trojena Dams Project

The Trojena Dams project will involve the construction of three lakes, integral to the development of the resort. The second, kidney-shaped dam will be connected to the nearby Lake Village via an underwater tunnel. This dam will be surrounded by the Enchanted Forest, landscaping, and various other attractions. The third dam will stand 65 meters high and span 490 meters across its crest, constructed using 4.15 million cubic meters of rockfill.

Additional works include the lakebed lining and the foundations for the Bow Building, a concrete structure that will overhang the valley beneath and house a hotel. Once completed, the Enchanted Forest will become a major attraction within the dam’s landscape. Together, the three dams will form the central lake of the Trojena Mountains resort, which will host the 2029 Winter Asian Games.
