Italian contractor WeBuild wins Saudi contract to build three dams in Trojena resort
Neom, the futuristic city in Saudi Arabia, has awarded a
substantial contract worth an estimated SR20 billion ($5 billion) to Italian
contractor WeBuild. This significant project involves the construction of three
dams in the Trojena mountain resort, forming an artificial lake that will be
central to hosting the Asian Winter Games in 2029.
The primary dam, with dimensions of 145 meters in height and
475 meters in length at its crest, will utilize 2.7 million cubic meters of
roller compact concrete (RCC). A secondary dam, designed in a kidney shape and
measuring 38 meters in height and 700 meters in length, will be built within
the planned lake, creating an island beneath the water level. This dam will be
connected to Lake Village by an underwater tunnel, featuring attractions like
the Enchanted Forest. The third dam, standing at 65 meters in height and 490
meters at its crest, will be constructed using 4.15 million cubic meters of
rockfill. The project also encompasses the lakebed line and foundations for the
Bow Building, a concrete structure at the lake's end, incorporating a hotel
with an overhanging view of the valley below.
Neom
advances Trojena dams project with commercial negotiations
This marks the second major contract for the Trojena
development. In October, Neom awarded a SR4.5 billion ($1.2 billion)
infrastructure contract to a joint venture between local Al-Ayuni Investment
& Contracting and Turkish Limak Holding, covering tunnel construction, a
freight depot, and excavation works at Trojena.
Earlier, Neom engaged in an early contractor involvement
(ECI) process with three contractors: a consortium of Al-Ayuni and Limak,
PowerChina from Beijing, and Italy's WeBuild. After evaluating proposals,
WeBuild secured the 26-month contract for the Trojena dams project.
NEOM's
amazing 2.8 km 'The Lake' takes shape at TROJENA ski destination
Launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trojena is
poised to become a year-round tourist destination, featuring a ski village,
family and wellness resorts, retail and dining facilities, and various sports
amenities. The ambitious project, slated for completion in 2026, is under the
engineering expertise of Singapore's Surbana Jurong, managed by the US-based
Aecom, with project management consultancy services provided by Bechtel.
