Saudi Arabia’s Neom and KOFIC collaborate on new training initiative
Neom has announced new partnership with the Korean Film Council
(KOFIC) to launch training initiatives for emerging filmmakers. The initiative,
set to begin in December 2024, will be led by KOFIC’s Korean Academy of Film
Arts, with experienced Korean filmmakers mentoring Saudi talent. Official
details are forthcoming.
This announcement was made during a panel discussion at the Busan Asian
Contents and Film Market, part of the ongoing Busan International Film
Festival. The panel, moderated by Kim Young-woo, programmer for the Red Sea
Film Festival, featured industry leaders including Ryan Ashore from Red Sea
Labs, Rasha AlEmam, CEO of Yellow Camel Studios, and veteran Korean producer
Seo Woo-sik.

During the discussion, AlEmam expressed enthusiasm about the readiness of
Saudi filmmakers to learn and engage. “The Saudis are eager to learn and want
to dive right into working on set. It’s a fertile environment for education,
training, and workshops,” she stated.
Woo-sik highlighted the importance of finding common ground for future
co-productions. “We need to take the time to understand each other's cultures
and build trust. It’s crucial for both audiences,” he emphasized. He also
recommended that Saudi talent travel to Korea to explore advancements in
technology and graphic design.

Additionally, Emad Z. Eskander, head of the Red Sea Fund, announced that the
fund, which previously focused on Arab and African film financing, is now open
to projects from all of Asia, inviting Korean filmmakers to take advantage of
Saudi Arabia’s generous incentives.
