NEOM to focus on establishing renewable microgrids for energy efficiency
Xendee Corporation, a leading
provider of design and operation platforms for distributed energy systems and
Electric Vehicle (EV) fast-charging infrastructure, has announced significant
progress in its collaboration with NEOM—a visionary initiative aimed at
developing sustainable cities in Saudi Arabia’s northwest region.
Initially, Xendee's role involved
transitioning NEOM from fossil-based energy systems to a renewable
energy-driven infrastructure. This phase focused on implementing diverse
technologies like building-integrated and rooftop solar panels, battery
systems, offshore and on-site wind turbines, hydrogen fuel cells, and
micro-hydro systems across key NEOM locations such as The Line, Gulf of Aqaba,
and Oxagon.

collaborates with NEOM to drive sustainable energy transition in Saudi Arabia
Recently, NEOM has encountered
challenges in achieving its ambitious goals within the original scope. Xendee
has played a crucial role in revising some foundational assumptions, demonstrating
that while 100% renewable energy is attainable, it requires adjustments to the
original cost projections. With Xendee's insights, NEOM is now transitioning to
the next project phase, emphasizing microgrid-powered cities and islands,
reducing reliance on expensive transmission projects and centralized power
plants.
Michael Stadler, CTO and Co-founder
of Xendee, remarked, "We’ve empowered the NEOM team with the training and
tools necessary to model distributed energy resources and design optimal
solutions tailored to NEOM’s unique power needs. This collaboration has led to
a refined plan that better aligns with both technical and economic
objectives."

The updated plan maintains the
commitment to 100% renewable energy and zero emissions but shifts focus from a
centralized power grid to more efficient distributed energy resources and
microgrids. In the new phase, Xendee is guiding the development of innovative,
renewable microgrids for an archipelago of over 10 islands, reducing the need
for extensive transmission infrastructure. This approach aims to maximize
renewable energy use, minimize CO2 emissions, and reduce costs, setting a new
standard for sustainable city development. Xendee will also continue to analyze
additional sites within the NEOM project to support this vision.
