HKS introduces its rendering for The Arena in Diriyah

HKS has revealed its design for The Arena in Diriyah, a 20,000-seat sports and entertainment venue in Saudi Arabia that draws inspiration from the nation's traditional architectural motifs of forts and palaces.

Commissioned by the Diriyah Company, the arena will be situated in Diriyah, serving as a focal point for tourism and contributing to the region's cultural and economic growth objectives outlined in the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative.

Spanning 76,000 square meters, the arena's design features monolithic volumes adorned with luminous triangular perforations, angular openings, and decorative elements reminiscent of Najdi architecture. These elements are interspersed with "digital waterfalls" – transparent facades that emit light, creating a striking visual effect that beckons visitors.

Lead architect Alex Thomas describes the design as emerging from the landscape akin to geological formations, paying homage to the ancient Nadji forts and palaces. The dynamic interplay of light and architecture aims to attract guests to the immersive experiences housed within.

Adjacent to the arena, a large paved plaza will offer space for outdoor performances and pop-up shows, enhancing the entertainment offerings for both locals and tourists. Furthermore, a retail and dining district with ample outdoor seating will provide a comprehensive entertainment experience.

Internally, the arena boasts a layout with rows of seating surrounding an illuminated central stage, complemented by a sizable digital screen. The venue's flexible configurations will accommodate a diverse range of events, ensuring versatility in its usage.

The Arena in Diriyah represents a significant component of the broader masterplan for Diriyah, which aims to accommodate a diverse population and further position the region as a cultural and economic hub. This project aligns with other ambitious developments in Saudi Arabia, including notable architectural endeavors such as Foster + Partners' two-kilometer-high skyscraper and Populous' cliffside stadium.
