Saudi Arabia unveils ambitious plan to achieve 95% waste recycling

Saudi Arabia taking steps to achieve up to 95% recycling

In a significant move toward sustainable development, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) in Saudi Arabia has disclosed a comprehensive plan aimed at revolutionizing the waste sector within the Kingdom. Central to this initiative is the ambitious goal of achieving up to 95% recycling, contributing an estimated SR120 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP).

The plan, outlined in MEWA's annual report for 2023, envisions the sustainable recycling of up to 100 million tons annually and the creation of over 100,000 job opportunities for citizens, aligning with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The report underscores the Ministry's commitment to strategic planning, emphasizing the importance of well-thought-out initiatives across all sectors to realize sustainable development goals.

As of the report, the Kingdom's current recycling rate in the waste management sector stands at a mere 3-4%, ranking among the lowest globally. MEWA's ambitious plan seeks to elevate this rate significantly to 95%, addressing environmental concerns and fostering a circular economy.

The report acknowledges the presence of harmful industrial waste, particularly medical waste, emphasizing the need for scientifically sound waste management to mitigate potential risks to citizens and society. MEWA's waste management and sector regulation center collaborates with the private sector to realize the outlined targets.

Furthermore, the report highlights the positive environmental impact of MEWA's efforts, noting the preservation of over 90,000 hectares of land and the planting of more than 50 million trees. Increased community awareness, coupled with environmental compliance measures, has contributed to an enhanced quality of life.

Noteworthy achievements include a substantial reduction in dust storms, with the Dust Storm Center recording a historic low of only 10%. This positive trend is attributed to the establishment of numerous reserves, increased rainfall, cloud seeding programs, and the preservation of over 99,000 hectares of land, complemented by the extensive planting of approximately 50 million trees across the Kingdom.
