Saudi eco-friendly policies: Roshn and Partanna Arabia to reduce carbon impact in concrete production
In a strategic move towards sustainable construction,
leading real estate developer Roshn has joined forces with Riyadh-based climate
technology company Partanna Arabia. The collaboration aims to establish a
cutting-edge carbon-negative concrete production facility, initially focusing
on delivering eco-friendly pavers and expanding to include blocks, tiles,
precast, and pour-in-place solutions over time.
This initiative aligns with Roshn's ambitious mission to
construct over 400,000 homes, 1,000 kindergartens and schools, and more than
700 mosques by 2030. The facility, expected to create over 100 jobs, is set to
play a crucial role in supporting Saudi Arabia's robust construction pipeline.

Roshn, backed by the sovereign wealth fund PIF, is committed
to investing in sustainable and self-sufficient communities. The partnership
with Partanna follows the latter's successful launch of the world's first
carbon-negative 'home for the world' in The Bahamas, with plans for 1,000 such
homes in collaboration with the Bahamian Government.
Partanna's proprietary concrete formula, crafted from
recycled ingredients, eliminates the need for Portland cement or heating during
production. The patented mixing process actively absorbs CO₂, making buildings
and infrastructure constructed with Partanna materials carbon negative,
contributing to environmental healing.

The concrete formula utilizes waste brine from desalination
plants, a significant step in conserving natural resources and reducing waste
in a country where desalination plants produce 70% of drinking water. The new
facility reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to sustainability outlined in
Vision 2030, including the goal of achieving Net Zero by 2060.
Acknowledging the construction industry's substantial carbon
footprint, Partanna estimates that constructing 100,000 homes with their
material could offset emissions equivalent to over 1 million cars annually. At
full capacity, the planned facility has the potential to generate 1.3 million
carbon credits per year, offering businesses the opportunity to offset their
emissions.

Partanna CEO Rick Fox expressed excitement about the
partnership, emphasizing the pioneering nature of the collaboration. He
highlighted the transformative impact the venture could have on sustainable
construction, noting that the partnership aims to change the global approach to
building by demonstrating that sustainability can be achieved without
compromise.
The announcement underscores the commitment of both Roshn
and Partanna to lead the way in adopting groundbreaking technologies and
fostering sustainable development, setting a new standard for environmentally
conscious construction practices in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
