NEOM subsidiary ENOWA taking steps to reduce the carbon impact of desalination

NEOM's subsidiary, ENOWA, which focuses on water and electricity, is actively engaged in efforts to decrease the carbon footprint associated with the energy-intensive desalination process. During an interview, CEO Peter Terium emphasized the crucial role of integrating renewable energy solutions into desalination to mitigate harmful emissions at both regional and global levels.

Terium underscored two critical factors in effectively incorporating renewable energy into the process without exacerbating the company's carbon footprint. The first factor is managing the substantial energy demands of desalination, which, when sourced from conventional heat-based methods, contributes to increased carbon emissions. The second factor involves addressing the substantial losses and leaks in conventional water systems, which necessitate excessive desalination.

To achieve more sustainable practices, NEOM is transitioning to advanced wastewater treatment methods. Terium stressed the significance of wastewater treatment within circular systems, as it is pivotal for fostering ecological equilibrium.

By 2030, Saudi Arabia aims to have half of its energy derived from renewable sources. NEOM has set an ambitious objective to achieve 100% renewable energy utilization by 2030, aligning its goals with the broader renewable energy objectives of the Kingdom.

Terium applauded Saudi Arabia's proactive approach and unwavering commitment to realizing its Vision 2030 objectives. He also highlighted the Hydrogen Innovation and Development Center as evidence of the Kingdom's dedication to sustainability.

NEOM Green Hydrogen Initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals

ENOWA recently entered into an agreement to construct NEOM's inaugural hydrogen fueling station, thus supporting the mega-city's environmental development goals and providing critical infrastructure for decarbonization.

Terium emphasized the necessity for diverse energy sources beyond electricity, recognizing that a substantial portion of energy needs cannot be met exclusively through electricity. Roland Kaeppner, Executive Director of Hydrogen and Green Fuels at ENOWA, underscored the role of hydrogen in decarbonization efforts. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the current hydrogen production from natural gas results in approximately one gigaton of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The MENA Climate Week, conducted in collaboration with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, served as a platform for experts, policymakers, and scientists to deliberate on strategies for mitigating the consequences of global warming. Saudi Arabia's active participation in initiatives like the Saudi Green Initiative and the adoption of renewables underscored its leadership in the region's transition toward sustainability.
