First opera house to open in Saudi Arabia by 2028
Saudi Arabia is set to unveil its first opera house, the
Royal Diriyah Opera House, by 2028, according to an announcement by Diriyah
Company and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. The opera house, designed by
the renowned architectural firm Snøhetta with support from Riyadh-based syn
architects, will be located near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Turaif.
Spanning 46,000 square meters, the opera house will
accommodate 3,500 people across four venues, including a 2,000-seat theater for
large-scale productions and headline artists. The design is rooted in the
surrounding desert landscape and local cultural heritage, drawing inspiration
from Najdi building traditions and the prehistoric era of Diriyah.

Anticipated to open in 2028, the opera house will serve as a
new stage for performers, cultural exchange, and audiences. The interconnected
buildings will provide shielded relief from the intense Saudi sun, featuring
open passages and a green garden open to visitors and the wider public. The
integration of public spaces aims to enhance the intrinsic value of the
location, contributing to Diriyah's culturally driven development vision.
The announcement was made during the Bashayer 2023 event,
where other impressive plans for Diriyah were revealed, including updates on
the Wadi Safar project, featuring hotels like Aman, Oberoi, and Six Senses. The
event showcased Diriyah's commitment to creating spaces that transcend the
ordinary and establish the area as a premier destination for sports and
leisure. The Royal Diriyah Opera House is expected to be a visionary addition
to Diriyah's cultural landscape.
