Former Kier London chief joins Neom’s Trojena
On October 23, 2023, David McKenzie, the former head of
Kier's London and Southern region, commenced his role as an executive director
in a section of Saudi Arabia's monumental $500 billion Neom mega project. McKenzie
had previously departed Kier earlier this year after a two-year tenure, having
joined from Aecom in February 2021.
With extensive experience in the Middle East, working for
both Aecom and, prior to that, Lendlease, McKenzie now serves as an executive
director at Neom's Trojena project, where he began his responsibilities last
month.
Marriot
International to establish two properties in Neom’s Trojena
Neom, located in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia, is a
comprehensive urban development encompassing multiple areas, a floating
industrial complex, a global trade hub, and various tourist resorts. Among
these resorts, Trojena stands out as the first sub-zero snow destination and
outdoor ski resort in the Gulf.
Trojena aspires to host over 7,000 permanent residents and
aims to attract more than 700,000 annual visitors by the end of the decade.
Philip Gullet, the head of the scheme and a former partner at Gardiner &
Theobald, as well as a previous COO at Battersea Power Station, emphasized that
the concept of a ski resort in the Gulf is not as far-fetched as it may
initially appear. He pointed out that Trojena experiences natural snowfall each
year and maintains sub-zero temperatures during the winter months, solidifying
its status as a winter sports destination.
NEOM's
Trojena snow resort: A pinnacle of sustainable skiing in Saudi Arabia
The ski slopes at Trojena will be situated at an elevation
of approximately 2,400 meters above sea level, where temperatures range from
-17 degrees Celsius to 22 degrees Celsius. Artificial snowmaking facilities will
also be employed at the resort.
As part of the project, Trojena is set to feature 36
kilometers of ski slopes, over 3,500 hotel rooms and serviced apartments, a
3,000-seat amphitheater, over 100 indoor and outdoor activities, and 42,000
square meters of retail and dining space.
