finishing material for luxury hotels, cultural landmarks and residential
developments, offering a blend of sustainability, heritage and modern design.
The revival reflects a growing shift across the
Kingdom’s construction sector, where developers are increasingly balancing
rapid urban expansion with environmental responsibility. Alongside mega and
giga projects, architects are embracing natural materials that reduce carbon
emissions while preserving Saudi Arabia’s architectural identity.
For centuries, clay played a vital role in shaping the
Kingdom’s built environment. Thick earthen walls naturally regulated indoor
temperatures and humidity, creating comfortable living spaces suited to the
desert climate long before modern cooling systems became commonplace. Today,

The environmental advantages are substantial. Unlike
cement- and acrylic-based finishes, natural clay plasters require significantly
less energy to manufacture because they are dried rather than fired or
chemically processed. They also contain little to no volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), contributing to healthier indoor air quality, while their natural
ability to absorb and release moisture helps regulate humidity inside
buildings.
Perhaps most significantly, clay supports efforts to
reduce embodied carbon—the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the
extraction, manufacturing, transportation and installation of construction
materials—an increasingly important consideration as Saudi Arabia advances one
of the world's largest development pipelines.
Majed Al-Qatari, a Saudi sustainability expert, believes
the Kingdom's unprecedented construction activity presents an opportunity to
rethink not only how buildings are designed, but also the materials used to
build them.
"Saudi Arabia's boom in construction paves the
way for a much-needed consideration of not just construction volume, but also
construction materials," he said.
According to Al-Qatari, natural clay materials can
significantly reduce embodied carbon due to their lower processing
requirements, absence of petrochemical binders and potential for local
sourcing, which minimizes transportation-related emissions while supporting
circular economy principles.
He added that clay offers benefits beyond emissions
reduction.
"Clay finishes naturally regulate indoor
humidity, improve thermal comfort and are free from volatile organic compounds,
creating healthier indoor environments," he said. "While
clay is not intended to replace structural materials such as concrete or steel,
it has significant potential as a scalable finishing material that combines
traditional building knowledge with modern engineering."
Research also indicates that clay finishes generally
have lower embodied carbon than conventional acrylic or cement-based coatings
while requiring less maintenance over a building's lifecycle. Their breathable,
repairable and recyclable properties further strengthen their environmental
credentials.

Growing industry interest was recently highlighted in
Riyadh, where Conmarble Atelier hosted British natural plaster manufacturer Clayworks
for an interactive workshop that brought together architects, designers and
construction professionals to explore traditional clay plastering techniques.
Participants experienced firsthand how natural clay finishes can be applied to
create a wide range of textures suited to contemporary interiors.
For Clayworks, the event reflected more than product
promotion—it underscored Saudi Arabia's emergence as a rapidly expanding market
for sustainable building materials.
"We started getting lots of specifications from
architects and designers in Saudi Arabia about five years ago," said James Bryce, the company's
representative for Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC. "The volume kept
increasing to the point that we couldn't ignore it anymore, which is why we
needed to be present here and tailor our designs to Saudi Arabia."
The company now supplies natural clay finishes for
projects including developments by Red Sea Global and Diriyah, where designers
are incorporating the material into luxury hotels, cultural venues and high-end
residential communities.
Bryce believes the Kingdom's longstanding relationship
with earth-based architecture gives Saudi Arabia a unique advantage in adopting
natural construction materials.
"Saudi Arabia has a very strong tradition and
relationship with earth and natural materials," he said. "Where
we can show designs that are sensitive to that tradition while also making them
contemporary for the future, we've found the right balance."
Unlike conventional paints, Clayworks' products are made
entirely from natural clay, with different textures and finishes created
through specialized application techniques rather than chemical alterations to
the material itself. This versatility allows designers to achieve everything
from smooth minimalist interiors to richly textured feature walls and
moisture-resistant finishes using the same natural base.
