Newly published book focuses on Umm Daraj, one of AlUla's most significant archaeological sites
The Royal Commission
for AlUla (RCU) has released a new scholarly publication, "Umm
Daraj: Beacon of the Lihyan Kingdom," reinforcing its commitment
to preserving and documenting the region's rich archaeological and cultural
heritage.
Authored by Dr. Hussein bin Ali Abu Al Hassan and
published in Arabic, English and French, the book forms part of RCU's ongoing
efforts to expand archaeological knowledge, support academic research and make
scientific discoveries accessible to researchers, specialists and the wider
public.
The publication focuses on Umm Daraj, one of AlUla's
most significant archaeological sites associated with the ancient Lihyan
Kingdom. Drawing on extensive archaeological studies and fieldwork, the book
presents new research findings and scientific evidence that offer deeper
insight into AlUla's history and the civilizations that flourished in northwest
Arabia.

Arabia's UNESCO exhibition shines light on At-Turaif, Diriyah's legacy
Dating to the third and second centuries BCE, Umm Daraj
is regarded as one of the kingdom's most important historical sites. Among its
most notable features is an exceptional stone staircase, believed to be one of
the longest surviving ancient stairways in the region, demonstrating the
advanced engineering, architectural planning and adaptation to the rugged
landscape achieved by the Lihyanites.
The book examines the site's architectural remains,
Lihyanite inscriptions, rock carvings and a wide range of archaeological
discoveries that shed light on the kingdom's political, cultural and social
development. It also documents several inscriptions uncovered at Umm Daraj,
providing their readings, translations and scholarly interpretations to enhance
understanding of the Lihyan Kingdom's history and cultural legacy.
In addition, the publication highlights Umm Daraj's role
as one of the principal archaeological sites illustrating AlUla's prosperity
during the first millennium BCE. Archaeological evidence presented in the book
reveals the area's importance as a centre of human settlement, trade and
cultural exchange, underscoring its place within the broader cultural landscape
of northwest Arabia.
The release forms part of RCU's broader strategy to
promote scientific research, preserve cultural heritage and support specialists
in publishing scholarly work. These efforts align with the objectives of Saudi
Vision 2030 and AlUla Vision, which seek to share the region's heritage with
international audiences while advancing understanding of the history and
civilizations of northwest Arabia.
