Saudi Arabia to develop one of the world’s largest astronomical observatories in AlUla

The facility is expected to rank among the largest observatories of its kind globally

Saudi Arabia's AlUla to build a gigantic astronomical observatory

Saudi Arabia has announced the development of AlUla Manara, a major astronomy and astro-tourism destination that will feature one of the world’s largest astronomical observatories, reinforcing the Kingdom’s growing investment in space science, research, and scientific tourism.

Located more than 70 kilometres north of AlUla, the project is set in an area known for its exceptionally dark skies and minimal light pollution—conditions considered ideal for advanced astronomical observation.

A major global observatory facility

At the center of AlUla Manara will be a flagship observatory equipped with a four-metre-diameter main telescope, alongside two additional telescopes measuring two metres each. The facility is expected to rank among the largest observatories of its kind globally, significantly expanding Saudi Arabia’s capacity for deep-space observation and research.

The project will also include advanced scientific infrastructure such as research laboratories, observation platforms, and dedicated facilities for both professional astronomers and visiting researchers.

Partnership between leading scientific institutions

AlUla Manara is being developed by the Royal Commission for AlUla in collaboration with the Saudi Space Agency, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and the SETI Institute. The partnership brings together national and international expertise in space science, astronomical research, and advanced observation technologies.

Officials said the initiative is designed to position Saudi Arabia as an emerging hub for astronomy and space science in the region and globally.

Science meets tourism in a protected dark-sky environment

A defining feature of the project is its integration of scientific research with public engagement and tourism experiences. AlUla Manara will include interactive exhibitions, educational programming, and immersive stargazing facilities designed to introduce visitors to astronomy in an accessible and experiential format.

The development will also incorporate strict environmental safeguards to preserve the area’s natural darkness, including advanced light-pollution control measures intended to protect the observatory’s scientific integrity and enhance the quality of night-sky observation.

Boosting Saudi Arabia’s astro-tourism ambitions

Officials described AlUla Manara as a landmark initiative that combines sustainability, scientific advancement, and tourism development. By leveraging AlUla’s unique geographical and environmental conditions, the project is expected to attract international researchers, astronomy enthusiasts, and cultural tourists.

The observatory is also expected to strengthen AlUla’s positioning as a global destination for astro-tourism and scientific discovery, further diversifying Saudi Arabia’s tourism offering under Vision 2030 and expanding its footprint in space-related research and education.
