AlUla offers immersive way to experience Saudi heritage by engaging directly with local traditions

In AlUla, a new cultural initiative is offering visitors a deeply immersive way to experience Saudi heritage by engaging directly with local traditions, daily life, and community practices.

The project, called Hayaku, was founded by Albandary Ibrahim to present Saudi culture in an authentic and lived format rather than through staged displays. The name, derived from a local AlUla expression meaning “let’s go,” reflects an open invitation to explore the region’s traditions in a natural and accessible way.

Hayaku collaborates closely with local residents to create experiences rooted in everyday life, including food preparation, farming, traditional crafts, and storytelling. A key highlight is its traditional attire experience in AlUla Old Town, where visitors can wear historically inspired clothing and learn about regional dress practices passed down through generations.

The initiative also aims to raise awareness about the diversity of Saudi traditional clothing. While garments such as the abaya and thobe are widely recognized, regional variations remain less known. To ensure authenticity, the project draws on extensive research, including consultations with heritage experts, cultural institutions, and local community members.

The attire featured through Hayaku is based on documented historical references and original designs, with only minimal adjustments made to materials when necessary. The focus remains on preservation, ensuring that traditional culture is presented without altering its core identity.

Hayaku began in a family-owned space in AlUla Old Town during the AlUla Season festival, chosen for its personal and historical significance to the founder. It has since evolved into a broader platform, enabling local hosts to share cultural experiences in their homes, farms, and community spaces.

Rather than standardizing interactions, the initiative encourages hosts to welcome visitors as they would in their everyday lives, prioritizing spontaneity and authenticity over scripted presentations.

Looking ahead, Hayaku plans to expand to other regions across Saudi Arabia, aiming to highlight the unique cultural identities of different communities while fostering deeper understanding and meaningful connections for visitors.
