New governor of Diriyah reflecting its growing national and international importance 

Prince Rakan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has been appointed Governor of Diriyah under a royal order issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, underscoring the strategic significance of the historic governorate at a decisive moment in its development.

The appointment was part of a series of royal decrees announced on Thursday, reflecting Diriyah’s growing national and international importance as it undergoes a far-reaching transformation.

Diriyah occupies a central place in Saudi history as the birthplace of the Saudi state and a symbol of unity and heritage. Today, it is being redeveloped into a leading global cultural destination, reviving its historic status as a center of commerce, scholarship, and culture.

Prince Rakan’s leadership comes as Diriyah transitions from the historic capital of the First Saudi State into a world-class cultural and tourism hub designed to meet the aspirations of the 21st century.

Born in 1997, Prince Rakan is the youngest son of King Salman. He holds a bachelor’s degree in law from King Saud University in Riyadh, bringing legal expertise to a role that combines heritage preservation with modern governance and strategic planning.

Diriyah is currently witnessing unprecedented growth, evolving beyond its image as a heritage site into a vast, integrated development zone with plans to attract up to 100 million visitors annually by 2030.
