Saudi Arabia receives bids for 65-kilometre Riyadh Metro link
Contractors have submitted bids for the
65-kilometre Riyadh
Metro Line 7 project, a major new rail corridor set to connect Qiddiya with Diriyah. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City
(RCRC) received proposals on 31 January for the design-and-build contract.
Line 7 will form a critical link between several
of Riyadh’s flagship developments, including Qiddiya entertainment city, King
Abdullah International Gardens, King Salman Park, Misk City, and Diriyah Gate.
The project is expected to play a key role in enhancing urban connectivity
across the capital.
The metro line will span approximately 65
kilometres, comprising 47 kilometres of underground track and 19 kilometres of
elevated sections. A total of 19 stations are planned, with 14 located
underground and five built above ground.

Design and consultancy scope
Several international engineering firms are
supporting the bidding teams. Spanish consultancies Typsa and Ayesa, alongside
US-based Aecom, are acting as design consultants for the Alstom-led consortium.
Idom and South Korea’s Dowha are providing design services for the Siemens-led
team, while Spain’s Sener and US firm Jacobs are supporting the Hitachi
Rail-led group.
Programme-level consultancy services for the
scheme are being delivered by France’s Egis and Lebanon-based Dar Al-Handasah.
Previously, in June 2020, a joint venture led by French consultancy Systra was
awarded the preliminary design contract for the second phase of the Riyadh
Metro programme.
Wider Riyadh Metro context
Riyadh Metro Phase I comprises six lines and
84 stations. The RCRC completed the phased rollout of the initial network with
the commencement of Orange Line operations in January. Construction has also
begun on the next phase of the programme, including the extension of Line 2.
