Saudi Arabia: Construction work in full swing in Najdi heritage inspired Diriyah Arena

Diriyah Arena will be a future icon on the Kingdom’s live events landscape

Saudi Arabia: Construction work rapidly progressing at Diriyah Arena

Construction at the Diriyah Arena, on the outskirts of Riyadh, is progressing rapidly, marking a major milestone in Diriyah’s ambitious transformation.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Khaled AlOjyan highlighted the pace and scale of the development, noting that the extensive foundations, retaining structures and early superstructure elements now visible across the site demonstrate how quickly the megaproject is rising. Awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for SAR 5.75 billion, the arena is now firmly in full execution mode, with hundreds of workers, cranes and heavy machinery shaping what will soon become one of Saudi Arabia’s most advanced indoor entertainment venues.

AlOjyan also described the Diriyah Arena as a future icon on the Kingdom’s live events landscape. Designed by HKS, Inc., the flexible, multipurpose venue will host a wide range of events, including international sports competitions, concerts, esports championships, exhibitions and live shows. Its architectural concept draws inspiration from Diriyah’s dramatic natural cliffs and the enduring elegance of Najdi heritage, seamlessly blending cultural authenticity with modern engineering.

Key features of Diriyah Arena include:

·        74,000 sq m gross floor area

·        20,000-seat capacity

·        Architecture inspired by the At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site

Together, these elements position the arena as a powerful cultural and entertainment anchor, designed to attract residents and global visitors throughout the year.

The wider Arena Block will also comprise:

·        Three mixed-use office buildings designed by John McAslan + Partners (114,000 sq m)

·        A parking facility with more than 4,000 spaces

·        Advanced, fully integrated district-wide infrastructure networks

This broader development creates an ecosystem where entertainment, business and community life intersect seamlessly. As a flagship component of the 14 sq km Diriyah masterplan, backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the arena complements other world-class cultural assets, including the Royal Diriyah Opera House, nine museums and multiple academies.
