Saudi Arabia: AlUla Airport expansion inaugurated to boost capacity to 700,000 passengers a year

The expansion underscores the commission’s commitment to positioning AlUla as an emerging logistics and aviation hub

Saudi Arabia: Governor RCU opens AlUla airport extension to accommodate more passengers

Prince Badr bin Farhan, Minister of Culture and Governor of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), has inaugurated the expansion of lounges and terminal facilities at AlUla International Airport, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity and operational capabilities.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by General Authority of Civil Aviation President Abdulaziz Al-Duailej and RCU Chief Executive Officer Abeer Al-Aql.

The expansion underscores the commission’s commitment to strengthening critical infrastructure and positioning AlUla as an emerging logistics and aviation hub. Designed to meet rising passenger demand and increased domestic and international flight activity, the project also supports the growing needs of visitors and investors, reinforcing the airport’s role in tourism and economic development.

According to the RCU, the development is built around three core pillars: enabling sustainable growth in AlUla, improving operational readiness and the passenger experience, and delivering an integrated system that serves travelers, investors and airlines alike.

The project aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030, while enhancing AlUla’s attractiveness as an investment destination in both the tourism and aviation sectors.

As part of the expansion, the total terminal area increased by around 44%, from 3,800 square meters to approximately 5,450 square meters. This has raised the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity from 400,000 to 700,000 — a 75% increase.

Passenger experience improvements include the introduction of smart technologies such as electronic gates to streamline procedures and elevate service quality. The international arrivals hall was also expanded, with passport control counters increased from four to 12 to accommodate future traffic growth.

The terminal upgrade forms part of a wider development program at AlUla International Airport, which includes expanding destination networks and attracting international airlines. In addition, during the latest Future Investment Initiative forum, the RCU signed an agreement to manage and operate a private aircraft terminal, enhancing ground services and long-term operational readiness.
