Saudi Arabia launches first direct air capture unit in Riyadh to advance carbon removal goals

Saudi Arabia working on meeting its net-zero emissions target

Saudi Arabia has taken a major step in its climate strategy with the inauguration of its first Direct Air Capture (DAC) demonstration unit in Riyadh. The project, launched on July 27 through a partnership between the Ministry of Energy, the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC), and Swiss company Climeworks, aims to directly extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to help meet the Kingdom’s net-zero emissions targets.

The mobile DAC unit, located at KAPSARC, is designed to test how the technology performs under Saudi Arabia’s extreme heat. Unlike Climeworks’ previous DAC installations in cooler regions such as Iceland, this pilot project will generate critical data to optimize the technology for use in hot, arid environments common across much of the world.

The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader plan to scale up carbon capture efforts. The Kingdom targets capturing up to 44 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2035 through the development of large-scale Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) hubs in both the Eastern and Western regions. These facilities will capture industrial emissions for either permanent storage or conversion into useful products, contributing to emissions reduction while fostering economic growth.

Beyond environmental impact, the DAC project is expected to stimulate economic opportunities. Localizing the production of DAC components and materials could establish new industries, create jobs, and support economic diversification in line with Vision 2030 objectives.

The initiative also reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the Circular Carbon Economy framework, which focuses on reducing, reusing, recycling, and removing carbon emissions. By pioneering DAC technology in harsh climates, the Kingdom is positioning itself as a global leader in carbon management solutions and innovation in climate technologies.
