Oxagon Port takes shape at NEOM’s mega construction site

The port will serve as a critical gateway for global trade, positioned near the Suez Canal

Satellite images show progress at the Port of Neom

Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Oxagon project—touted as the world’s largest floating industrial complex—is advancing rapidly, with new satellite images highlighting major progress at the Port of NEOM.

Located on the Red Sea and forming a core part of the broader NEOM smart city initiative, Oxagon is designed as a clean-tech, renewable-powered hub for advanced manufacturing and global logistics. Backed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the development is a key component of Saudi Arabia’s long-term strategy to transition beyond oil.

Recent images from the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites show significant construction activity, including work on port infrastructure, industrial zones, and the early phases of housing and logistics areas. The port will serve as a critical gateway for global trade, positioned near the Suez Canal—a route for nearly 12% of worldwide shipping.

Technology-driven growth

The Port of NEOM recently took delivery of its first automated, remote-controlled cranes, which will power the Red Sea terminal’s cargo operations.

“The Port of NEOM is excited to receive the first batch of cranes and other cargo handling equipment as we come another step closer to delivering our vision,” said Melissa Blake, Port Director at NEOM, via LinkedIn.

Industry analysts, including Blackridge Research, see Oxagon’s location and infrastructure as pivotal to reshaping global trade routes between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

City of the future

First unveiled in 2021, Oxagon is envisioned as a blueprint for next-generation industrial cities. The plan includes housing for up to 90,000 residents and emphasizes sustainability, digital innovation, and circular economy principles.

One of Oxagon’s flagship projects is an $8.4 billion green hydrogen facility—slated to be the world’s largest—under development by NEOM’s Green Hydrogen Company.

“Industrial development cannot continue at the expense of people or the environment,” said Oxagon CEO Vishal Wanchoo. “We’re offering a compact, mixed-use city where industry, nature, and community coexist.”

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman echoed this ambition at the project’s launch, describing Oxagon as a new focal point for regional trade and a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s economic transformation.

As development continues, Oxagon is positioning itself not just as a port or industrial city—but as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s post-oil vision for innovation and global integration.
