Diriyah Art Futures returns from April 21 to July 19

Saudi Arabia continues to make its mark on the global cultural stage with the return of Diriyah Art Futures, a pioneering platform for contemporary digital and media art. The second edition of the exhibition, titled Maknana: An Archaeology of New Media Art in the Arab World, will run from April 21 to July 19 in the historic Diriyah district of Riyadh.

Co-curated by esteemed artists and curators Haytham Nawar and Ala Younis, Maknana—a term that translates to “automation”—dives deep into the evolving relationship between technology and artistic expression in the Arab world. More than just a showcase of digital creativity, the exhibition invites audiences to explore how Arab artists engage with technology as both a medium and a subject of critique, innovation, and stor
ytelling.

Structured across four thematic sections—Automation, Autonomy, Ripples, and Glitch—Maknana presents a compelling narrative that spans generations and geographies, tracing the evolution of media art in the region.

Featuring over 40 artists from across the Arab world, the exhibition offers a diverse range of works, from early video art and archival installations to cutting-edge digital experiments. Notable featured artists include Ahmed Mater, Muhannad Shono, Emily Jacir, Mona Hatoum, Akram Zaatari, Hassan Meer, Hicham Berrada, and Farah Al-Qasimi, among others.

But Diriyah Art Futures is more than just an exhibition—it’s a full cultural experience. Visitors can also take part in talks, live performances, film screenings, and interactive workshops, offering a dynamic space for dialogue, exploration, and inspiration.
