Desert Rock: Saudi Arabia’s newest addition to luxury retreats invites guests

Nestled within the rugged Hejaz Mountains, Desert Rock is the newest addition to Saudi Arabia's ambitious Red Sea giga-project. This luxurious mountain retreat offers an unparalleled escape for affluent travelers, featuring breathtaking cliff-hanging villas and secluded private accommodations.

Designed by Oppenheim Architecture, Desert Rock draws inspiration from the ancient Nabataean civilization, known for its rock-carved architecture. The retreat is conveniently located a short drive from the new airport designed by Foster + Partners, adding ease of access to its exclusivity.

Spanning 7 acres (almost 3 hectares), Desert Rock features a range of accommodation options seamlessly integrated into the natural terrain. Highlights include:

  • Cliff-Hanging Villas and Mountain Crevice Villas, perched dramatically on the edge of the mountainside.
  • Mountain Cave Suites, carved directly into the rock for a unique, immersive experience.
  • A Royal Villa, designed for ultimate privacy and luxury.

Construction of this one-of-a-kind retreat involved a massive engineering effort, beginning with the excavation of a large tunnel into the mountain, followed by a painstaking seven-year process to carve out the accommodations.

“This is more than just a hotel – it’s a unique property crafted into the rock face, offering a truly immersive experience where luxury and nature come together,” said John Pagano, Group CEO of Red Sea Global. “We are ready to welcome guests to Desert Rock, our third self-operated hotel in the Red Sea Global hospitality portfolio.”

Desert Rock is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to diversify its economy through tourism, aligning with the country’s Vision 2030 goals. Alongside Neom and Qiddiya, the Red Sea giga-project is central to transforming Saudi Arabia from an oil-based economy to a global tourism destination. The completion of Desert Rock follows the launch of Neom’s first project, Sindalah.

Reservations are now open, with rates starting around $2,200 per night, depending on villa choice and length of stay. Whether for the gravity-defying villas or the serene mountain vistas, Desert Rock offers an unforgettable blend of luxury and nature.
