Saudi Arabia committed to sustainable urban growth 

Saudi Arabia is spotlighting its commitment to sustainable urban development at the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo, organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme from Nov. 4-8.

Representatives from the Baha region municipality underscored the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives, outlining the nation’s approach to sustainable urban initiatives, standards, and innovation in areas like transportation, waste management, green spaces, and community engagement. Baha Mayor Ali Al-Sawat emphasized Saudi Arabia’s dedication to advancing sustainable development across urban sectors, creating adaptable environments that enhance quality of life and protect the environment.

Leading the Saudi delegation, Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf highlighted the Kingdom’s vast experience in urban development. Speaking at the forum’s ministerial roundtable, he described Vision 2030 as a comprehensive strategy with 27 key objectives, each focused on enhancing the livability, economic resilience, environmental sustainability, and social cohesion of Saudi cities.

During a panel hosted by Saudi Arabia’s Quality of Life Program titled "Towards Future Cities: Putting Quality of Life and People’s Well-Being at the Core of Urban Planning," program CEO Khalid Albaker stressed the importance of cross-sector collaboration to achieve sustainable urban solutions. He highlighted the program’s 170 initiatives in sports, culture, tourism, and urban design, which support economic growth, innovation, and safety while advancing Saudi Arabia’s Quality of Life goals.

Saudi Arabia also showcased notable projects, such as the King Salman Park, Diriyah project, Sports Boulevard, and the Saudi Green Initiative, which focus on creating greener, more livable cities. Additional contributions from the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, the Riyadh municipality, and the Diriyah Gate Development Authority illustrated Saudi Arabia's comprehensive approach to urban planning and heritage preservation.

Real Estate General Authority CEO Abdullah Al-Hammad underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable urban futures. He emphasized the need for partnerships to address global urban challenges, building adaptable and resilient communities. Authority spokesperson Tayseer Al-Mufarrej further highlighted the Kingdom’s success in transforming informal settlements and creating sustainable housing to improve residents’ quality of life, stressing a holistic approach to urban development that balances environmental, social, and economic goals.

The Saudi delegation’s participation at the forum underscored the Kingdom’s active role in shaping sustainable, future-ready cities through a blend of traditional heritage and modern innovation.
