Saudi Arabia poised to become a leading hydrogen producer and exporter: Ghamdi

Clean hydrogen emerges as a pivotal solution for achieving sustainable decarbonization and combating climate change, asserts a top official at NEOM Green Hydrogen Co.

Wesam Al-Ghamdi, CEO of NEOM Green Hydrogen Co., emphasizes that clean hydrogen, when utilized, generates only water upon combustion, rendering it entirely carbon-free in its application.

Highlighting insights from the International Energy Agency's 2023 annual report, Al-Ghamdi underscores green hydrogen's significance in decarbonizing various sectors, including long-haul transport, chemicals, and iron and steel production.

Saudi Arabia's Neom Green Hydrogen Project to become a trend-setter in clean energy

NEOM Green Hydrogen Co.'s plant within the $500 billion NEOM project is set to commence operations by 2026, with a capacity to produce up to 600 tonnes of clean hydrogen per day, destined for global export in the form of green ammonia.

Al-Ghamdi envisions clean hydrogen as a critical component in the global energy transition, particularly in industries like steelmaking and mining, where substantial decarbonization is imperative.

Saudi Arabia aims to position itself as a leading hydrogen producer and exporter, with ambitions to produce four million tons of hydrogen annually by 2030, according to Al-Ghamdi.

NEOM Green Hydrogen project takes a major leap forward

The CEO expresses confidence in NEOM Green Hydrogen Co.'s role in spearheading green hydrogen production at scale, leveraging the Kingdom's renewable energy expertise and abundant natural resources.

Once fully operational in 2026, NGHC's green hydrogen project is projected to mitigate five million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, offering a solution for decarbonizing challenging sectors like heavy transport and industry.

NGHC prioritizes talent acquisition, aiming to recruit locally and globally, fostering a skilled workforce through comprehensive education and training programs.

NEOM Green Hydrogen Initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 goals

Construction of the green hydrogen plant progresses as planned, with major equipment deliveries and wind turbine installations underway, indicating significant strides towards operationalization.

Distinguishing itself from other global projects, NGHC has achieved financial closure for its green hydrogen plant, securing investments totaling $8.4 billion and securing long-term offtake agreements with partners like Air Products.

Al-Ghamdi envisions green hydrogen's potential for substantial expansion, positioning NGHC as a blueprint for future projects and demonstrating the emerging industry's viability.

Having assumed leadership in October 2023, Al-Ghamdi brings over 25 years of experience in engineering, operations, and project management to NGHC, driving the project towards completion under NEOM's visionary agenda.
