Saudi Arabia launches National Biotechnology Strategy
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has officially launched the
National Biotechnology Strategy, a groundbreaking initiative set to position
Saudi Arabia as a leader in biotechnology in the Middle East and North Africa
region by 2030, with aspirations to become a global biotechnology hub by 2040.
The comprehensive roadmap, outlined on the official Vision
2030 website, leverages Saudi Arabia's existing strengths, such as robust
capital access, a sizable market, government commitment, and a unique gene
pool. The strategy focuses on four strategic pillars: vaccines,
bio-manufacturing & localization, genomics, and plant optimization.
NEOM's
paradigm-shifting approach to personalized health and innovation
Recognizing the crucial role of vaccines post-COVID-19,
Saudi Arabia commits to innovative vaccine technologies. The strategy
emphasizes the significance of localization and bio-manufacturing in
establishing the Kingdom as the MENA region's premier biotech hub by 2030 and a
global leader by 2040.
Key steps include developing advanced biopharma
manufacturing capabilities and creating a cutting-edge local bio-manufacturing
platform, ensuring the availability of life-saving treatments, fortifying the
domestic biotech industry, and solidifying Saudi Arabia's global biotechnology
standing.

Genomics, identified as the next frontier of medicine,
positions Saudi Arabia to be a leading player in MENA, fostering innovation and
improving health outcomes. Additionally, the strategy contributes to enhancing
food security and sustainable agriculture through plant optimization, reducing
dependence on food imports and promoting self-sufficiency.
With a focus on citizens' health, economic growth, job
creation, and sustainable development, the strategy aims to create 11,000 new
job opportunities by 2030. By addressing barriers in talent, regulation,
funding, and infrastructure, the initiative strives to build a mature and
functional biotechnology ecosystem in Saudi Arabia.

economic diversification, with Saudi Arabia aiming to contribute three percent
of non-oil real GDP by 2040. The implementation of this strategy is poised to
establish Saudi Arabia as a leading biotechnology hub, driving innovation,
economic growth, and job creation on the regional and global stage.
