Saudi Green Initiative:
Over 6 million mangrove seedlings planted along coasts
The National Center
for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) has
successfully planted over 6 million mangrove seedlings along the coasts of the
Red Sea and the Arab Gulf in Saudi Arabia. The Jazan region received the
highest share with 3.3 million seedlings.
This ambitious effort
is part of Saudi Arabia's commitment to planting 100 million mangrove trees
along its coasts in the coming years, aligning with the objectives of the Saudi
Green Initiative (SGI) and the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Mangro
ve trees hold
significant environmental importance, offering various economic, tourism, and
environmental benefits.
One of their
remarkable qualities is their natural ability to store carbon efficiently,
making them superior to other forest species in this regard. Additionally,
mangroves serve as a natural habitat for migratory birds and contribute to
maximizing fish wealth, bolstering food security.
Moreover, these trees
play a crucial role in cleansing beaches from pollutants, and they have a
positive impact on local temperatures and climate humidity.
The NCVC's mission is to safeguard, develop, sustain, and preserve vegetation sites while tackling the challenges faced throughout Saudi Arabia. They strive to detect encroachments, combat overgrazing, and preserve natural resources and biodiversity. Furthermore, the center actively supports efforts to combat climate change on local, regional, and global levels, as part of the larger objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI).
