Mountains
in Neom’s Trojena ski resort receive snow
Saudi
Arabia’s Jabal al-Lawz mountains in Tabuk region received first snow of the
winter, lowering the temperature further.
The
mountain lies near the border with Jordan and is the only high point in the
oil-rich kingdom that receives snow in the colder months.
A
video posted on social media on
Tuesday showed strong winds and heavy snow covering
the mountain.
The
mountain stands tall at 2,549m.
Earlier
in 2022, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched Trojena, proposed
mountain tourism destination that will form part of the country's Neom project.
It
will be the first major outdoor skiing destination in the region when it is
completed in 2026, and will be the destination for the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
The decision was announced in October at the Olympic Council
of Asia (OCA) General Assembly in Cambodia. The General Assembly
unanimously approved the Saudi proposal.
According
to Neom chief executive Nadhmi al-Nasr, “Trojena will have a suitable
infrastructure to create the winter atmosphere in the heart of the desert, to
make this Winter Games an unprecedented global event.”
Trojena
is predicted to attract up to 700,000 winter sports fanatics annually.
