EarthCheck recognizes Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Global as sustainable destination
Red
Sea Global (RSG), a leading developer and pioneer in regenerative tourism,
has achieved a major milestone by earning EarthCheck’s
internationally recognised Sustainable Destinations certification for The Red
Sea. This marks the first time a destination in Saudi Arabia has received the
prestigious accolade.
The EarthCheck certification is awarded to destinations that demonstrate leadership in sustainable tourism. Unlike traditional certifications focused on individual hotels or attractions, it evaluates the environmental, social, and economic performance of an entire destination. Every aspect of The Red Sea — from design and operations to community engagement and conservation — was independently assessed by third-party auditors.

Raed Albasseet, Group Chief
Environment and Sustainability Officer at RSG, emphasised that the
certification reflects a strong commitment to measurable impact, noting that
the science-based EarthCheck programme sets rigorous global standards for
sustainability.
EarthCheck’s report highlighted several areas
where The Red Sea exceeds global best practices. These include energy
efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, supported by the destination’s
use of 100% renewable energy around the clock. The report also recognised
significant water conservation efforts, achieved through minimal irrigation, as
well as low landfill waste levels — nearly 75% better than benchmark standards.
Beyond environmental achievements, the audit underscored RSG’s contributions to local communities. Initiatives such as the English for Tourism Programme are helping residents develop skills for careers in the tourism sector, while the Jewar app provides a platform for sharing job opportunities, events, and community feedback.

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck,
praised RSG’s leadership in regenerative tourism, highlighting initiatives that
go beyond compliance. These include marine conservation efforts, such as
protecting endangered sea turtles, and fostering economic growth within local
communities. He also noted the significance of The Red Sea becoming the world’s
largest destination powered entirely by renewable energy.
With its comprehensive sustainability strategy and forward-thinking initiatives, The Red Sea sets a new benchmark for responsible tourism, both regionally and globally.
