Saudi Arabia to enhance trade links with Jordan through rail

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has announced the launch of new freight railway corridors connecting ports in the Eastern Province along the Arabian Gulf to the Al-Haditha Border Crossing.

The initiative is designed to enhance the movement of goods, strengthen export capacity, and improve supply chain efficiency, aligning with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Vision 2030.

In a statement shared on X, SAR said the project reflects its commitment to “bridging distances for a better tomorrow,” highlighting its role in supporting the Kingdom’s logistics transformation.

The move comes amid heightened tensions in the Arabian Gulf, where disruptions to shipping routes—particularly through the Strait of Hormuz—have impacted global trade. The vital passage typically handles around 20–30% of the world’s daily oil supply and a significant share of global liquefied natural gas shipments.

In response, Saudi Arabia has been actively pursuing alternative export routes. This includes redirecting crude oil shipments to the Red Sea port of Yanbu to ensure continuity of supply to international markets.
