New fuel stations in Saudi Arabia’s AlUla inspired by natural rock formation
Fuel stations across AlUla governorate are being
reimagined through a contemporary architectural lens, blending modern design
with the region’s dramatic desert landscape.
Inspired by AlUla’s natural rock formations and
earthy color palette, the new stations move beyond conventional roadside
structures. Instead, they integrate seamlessly into their surroundings,
enhancing the urban environment while preserving the integrity of the desert
setting.
Designed with clean lines and contemporary
materials, the projects reflect AlUla’s distinctive identity. The approach
prioritizes both visual appeal and user experience, creating functional spaces
that feel rooted in place rather than imposed upon it.
The innovative concepts were developed by
architect Salwa Samargandi of SAL Architects,
who balanced practicality with aesthetics, drawing inspiration from AlUla’s
cultural and architectural heritage.

One of the fuel station projects received
international recognition, winning a World Architecture Award in the Realized
Projects category, selected by a global jury.
The initiative forms part of wider efforts by
the Royal Commission for AlUla to upgrade
infrastructure, empower national talent, and elevate services for residents and
visitors.
To further guide development, the commission
established the AlUla Design Studio, which
provides consultation on new builds and restoration projects. The studio
ensures compliance with urban planning and sustainability standards while
promoting designs that harmonize with AlUla’s natural and historical context.
Through
this collaborative framework, AlUla continues to preserve its architectural
heritage while enabling thoughtful growth that respects the region’s identity,
safety standards, and environmental sustainability.
