Saudi Arabia: Royal Commission for AlUla and SURJ sign MoU to develop year-round sporting events

The partnership will explore the development of international sporting events and long-term investments in AlUla

Saudi Arabia's AlUla set to become a major sports attraction round the year

Saudi Arabia is accelerating its strategy to make sport a cornerstone of tourism, culture, and economic diversification. A major step in this direction was taken with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SURJ Sports Investment. The partnership will explore the development of international sporting events and long-term investments in AlUla, positioning the region as a year-round destination for elite sports.

AlUla: Emerging as a Multi-Sport Destination

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration between RCU and SURJ Sports Investment, including the creation of sports programs, joint investment opportunities, and the potential to host global events. This initiative aligns directly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to elevate the Kingdom as a global leader in sport, tourism, and culture.

The agreement will raise AlUla’s profile beyond its cultural and heritage appeal, enabling it to host high-profile events such as the Professional Fighters League (PFL) MENA series, tennis, polo, cycling, athletics, and show jumping competitions.

Beyond Events: Building a Long-Term Sports Ecosystem

The partnership focuses not only on hosting events but also on establishing a comprehensive sports ecosystem. Plans include athlete training camps, recovery and rehabilitation facilities, and opportunities for international championships, all designed to make AlUla a permanent fixture on the global sports calendar.

A particular emphasis is being placed on polo and equestrian sports, leveraging AlUla’s unique landscapes and heritage. Multi-year polo hosting rights are under consideration starting in 2027, ensuring a steady pipeline of elite equestrian events for the region.

Sport Driving Economic Growth and Tourism

Since its establishment in 2017, the RCU has led the sustainable development of AlUla, integrating sectors such as archaeology, tourism, arts, and infrastructure. Sport is now a key catalyst in this transformation, driving economic diversification, tourism growth, and community development.

The collaboration with SURJ Sports Investment will bring global expertise, sports intellectual property, and investment to AlUla, enhancing its tourism appeal. SURJ, launched in 2023 as a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), aims to accelerate the Middle East’s sports ecosystem, focusing on international sports properties, media, technology, and infrastructure.

Year-Round Activation and Global Visibility

Both RCU and SURJ Sports Investment aim to create a cohesive, year-round sports ecosystem rather than one-off events. Leveraging SURJ’s global portfolio and intellectual property will help position AlUla as an international hub for sports tourism, complementing its heritage and cultural offerings.

The initiative also reflects a broader trend across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, where investments in sports-led tourism are rapidly increasing. AlUla’s model—combining elite sports, cultural experiences, and heritage landscapes—offers a distinctive approach expected to attract athletes, spectators, and global event organizers.

Sustainable Programming and Strategic Partnerships

A core focus of the MoU is developing sustainable sports programming that supports broader cultural, economic, and leisure outcomes. By partnering with international sports organizations and investing in infrastructure, AlUla will enhance its tourism offering while strengthening the local economy.

Looking Ahead: AlUla’s Global Sports Vision

The RCU-SURJ partnership represents a major step toward establishing AlUla as a year-round, multi-sport destination. By combining elite events with community engagement, the region is poised to become a prominent player on the global sports tourism map.

Leveraging AlUla’s unique cultural and natural assets, the partnership will deliver a long-term, sustainable sports ecosystem, attract international visitors, and contribute to local development, positioning AlUla as one of the world’s most dynamic sports destinations.
