Film AlUla joins hands with Stampede Ventures to produce Hollywood film in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to become a global filmmaking hub took a major leap forward this month as production began on Chasing Red, the first major feature to shoot at the newly launched AlUla Studios. The film stars Madelaine Petsch and Gavin Casalegno and is being produced through a partnership between Film AlUla and US-based Stampede Ventures.

Landmark step for Saudi Arabia’s film industry

The start of production marks a milestone in the kingdom’s fast-expanding entertainment sector. The partnership forms part of a wider agreement that includes a slate of four films designed specifically for AlUla’s dramatic desert landscapes, as well as a local talent-building program aimed at developing the next generation of Saudi film professionals.

Under the initiative, 50 trainees will gain hands-on experience across core production departments — including camera, sound and set operations — a move industry observers say is essential for building a sustainable workforce.

The announcement comes as the region prepares for a major film festival, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s intent to position itself as a serious player in global screen production.

AlUla builds a full-service filmmaking ecosystem

Chasing Red will make use of both the state-of-the-art studio facilities and AlUla’s striking natural scenery — from towering sandstone canyons to archaeological sites dating back thousands of years.

The new complex includes two large soundstages, nearly 18,000 square feet of support facilities and extensive backlot space for custom-built sets. Combined with the region’s cinematic landscapes, the setup is designed to offer international producers a compelling, turnkey environment for big-budget projects.

AlUla has already served as a backdrop for several international shoots, but the launch of the studio signals a shift from location-based filming to full-scale production capabilities.
