Saudi Arabia to reach a storage capacity of 48 gigawatt-hours by 2030
Saudi Arabia has secured a spot
among the world’s top ten markets for battery energy storage, coinciding with
the launch of the Bisha Project, one of the largest energy storage initiatives
in the Middle East and Africa. With a capacity of 2,000 MWh, the Bisha project
contributes significantly to the Kingdom’s growing energy storage capabilities.
Under the National Renewable Energy
Program, overseen by the Ministry of Energy, Saudi Arabia aims to reach a
storage capacity of 48 gigawatt-hours (GWh) by 2030. So far, 26 GWh worth of
storage projects have been tendered, with work progressing across various
development stages.
These energy storage projects are
key to supporting Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy expansion, helping the
Kingdom achieve its goal of sourcing 50 percent of its total electricity
production from renewable energy by 2030.

Wood Mackenzie, a leading energy
consultancy, ranks Saudi Arabia as a frontrunner among emerging markets
experiencing rapid growth in energy storage. The Kingdom’s expanding storage
capacity is expected to solidify its position in the top ten global energy
storage markets over the next decade.
This growth aligns with the
objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to increase electricity production
from renewable sources like solar and wind. The Kingdom plans to operate 8 GWh
of energy storage by 2025 and 22 GWh by 2026, positioning itself as the
third-largest global market for energy storage, behind China and the United
States, based on announced storage capacities.
The recently launched Bisha battery
energy storage project consists of 488 advanced battery containers, offering a
storage capacity of 500 MW for up to four hours. This project enables battery
charging during low-demand periods and discharging during peak demand, ensuring
backup power is available when needed, improving electricity supply management
flexibility, and promoting smart solutions for a sustainable energy future.

Saudi Arabia’s energy sector is
undergoing a major transformation that strengthens its position as a global
leader in the production and export of diverse energy types. By the end of
2024, the total capacity of renewable energy projects in various stages of
development is projected to reach 44.1 GW.
Energy storage plays a crucial role
in enhancing the reliability of the electricity supply, improving the National
Grid’s ability to handle emergencies, and achieving strategic objectives for
advancing the Kingdom’s energy sector.
