Visitors to receive exceptional experience at Red Sea International Airport
Michael White, Chief Commercial
Officer of Red Sea International (RSI) Airport, spoke
with International Airport Review editor Holly Miles about
RSI’s vision to deliver an unmatched, luxurious airport experience. Designed to
integrate seamlessly with the Red Sea’s high-end tourism offering, RSI aims to
redefine what a commercial airport can be.
Innovative Design & Operational
Phases
RSI’s futuristic design, developed
by Foster + Partners and Jacobs, focuses on luxury and efficiency. Daa
International has been a key partner since 2020, overseeing design validation,
commissioning, and now the operational phase, set to continue for 10 years.
Unlike traditional airports, RSI is divided into five pod-like departure
suites, each offering an exclusive, hotel-inspired atmosphere.
Seamless Luxury: From Destination to
Departure
RSI’s mission is to eliminate the
disconnect often found between luxury destinations and their airports. The pods
enhance passenger comfort with spacious seating areas offering complimentary
Saudi coffee and dates. A mezzanine-level lounge caters to first- and
business-class passengers, providing an elevated experience akin to a five-star
resort.

Remote check-in services at partner
hotels allow guests to maximize their time at the destination. Luggage will be
transported directly to their accommodation, bypassing traditional baggage
claim unless requested. This minimizes airport dwell time and ensures a smooth,
stress-free journey.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability is integral to the
entire Red Sea project. RSI will be fully powered by renewable energy,
primarily solar. In addition, the airport will offer sustainable aviation fuel
(SAF), making it the first in Saudi Arabia to do so. Wherever possible,
electric vehicles will be utilized, further aligning with Red Sea Global’s
environmental commitment.
Smart Airport Features
RSI will leverage cutting-edge
technology to offer a seamless travel experience. This includes a fast-tracked
Travel Document Authorization System (TDAS) and smart luggage solutions. The
goal is to reduce dwell time significantly, with passengers moving directly
from immigration to boarding, bypassing traditional queues.

Managing Growth Responsibly
Although RSI is designed to handle
one million visitors annually by 2030, this capacity is intentionally capped to
protect the surrounding environment. Red Sea Global has prioritized
sustainability over potential tourism demand, a rare approach in the industry.
Expanding Hospitality
Currently, RSI serves three luxury
hotels:
Six Senses Southern Dunes
The St. Regis Red Sea Resort
Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
By the end of 2024, Shura Island,
RSI’s hub island, will open with around 2,200 keys across multiple five-star
hotels.

Future Connectivity
Passenger traffic is expected to
increase significantly by 2025. Currently, eight direct weekly flights operate
from Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dubai, with future expansions targeting European
markets like Switzerland and Germany. Guests will travel across the destination
via electric vehicles, boats, or seaplanes operated by Fly Red Sea, ensuring
sustainable and seamless island connections.
RSI is positioned to transform not
only Saudi Arabia’s aviation landscape but also global standards for luxury and
sustainable travel.
